This is one of my first ever "railfan pictures." It is Reading T1 #2124 at the old Steamtown in Vermont, and was one of my father's favorite engines. This was the only picture I took that day, even though I remember being amazed by all the engines. There was something sad about the old Steamtown, all the empty dirt around the engines and the lack of cover... and yet, what I wouldn't give to visit it again. Right after this, we went in to watch the film on F. Nelson Blount. |

NJ & NY North Hackensack Depot |
Description: |
The North Hackensack depot was built in 1895 to replace the Cherry Hill depot which had been destroyed by a cyclone. Modified over the years, it eventually became Jay's Fish Market, resulting in this trackside profile. The basic bones of the structure however remained intact. Sadly, this building burned to the ground shortly after this picture was taken. I really whish I'd shot a picture of this building with a better camera than my dad's 1936 vintage Argus Model A (hence the vignetting and softness) |

Conrail NB31 NJ NY Driller still looking very EL |
Description: |
Railfanning on a Schwinn ten speed was hard, and meant mostly taking pics of train stations... but on one of my early adventures, as I rode down along the Pascack Valley Line, I spotted something grey, maroon, and yellow up in the distance. My heart began to race and I peddled hard to get there before it moved. I was a little disappointed it was an end cab, but it was okay... my first freight train picture ever. SW9 #436 was delivered to the Erie as class SE-12 on 4/52. Later it went to Conrail 9012, NJDOT 436 and lives on today as NY&GL (Erie 436). |

Description: |
A friend just e-mailed asking for a Penn Central shot... well, even though this is a Conrail train, it looks pretty PC. A pair of Penn Central E44s pulls a long freight through Princeton Junction in one of my very first railfanning shots taken with an SLR (my Dad's Argus Cosina). While I still have the camera, I have no chance of ever seeing this rainy day view again. |

Description: |
Maintenance has a look at ACMU 1164 while a Conrail conductor looks on. ACMU #1164 was part of the fourth order for these cars and was delivered to the Port Authority of NY & NJ for use by the New York Central in 1965. Like all the ACMUs, they were built by Pullman-Standard. Delieverd in Dupont Green, she was later repainted into MTA silver and blue. |

Description: |
A Pascack Valley Line train behind an NJDOT Bluebird stops near a Jersey City mile marker and a Red & Tan Line "New Look" GM Fishbowl Bus. Oradell's Queen Anne style depot was built in 1890. The section closest to the bus was the Wells Fargo Express office. The station originally had separate men's and women's waiting rooms. The U34CH was part of the Spring 1971 group of these shaft driven HEP units. They were called "Bluebirds" due to their NJDOT colors. |

Description: |
Conrail 1607 splits the signals at Milepost 19.2. In moments it will cross Kinderkamack and stop in Emerson @ the old Etna depot. The U34CH had a wonderful GE chug, which you could hear all the way to my house in Paramus on cold nights. 3380 was part of the second NJDOT/EL order for "Bluebirds" (third delivery) and was delivered in January of 1973, making her about four years old in this shot. |

The CNJ logo as seen on the flank of 1954 vintage RDC1 #553 from the Cranford NJ platform. This unit was part of a two-car RDC train running the "Scoot," aka the Bayonne Shuttle, which had about a year left at this time (it last ran August 6, 1978). Riding this service was a blast. I remember a very bouncy ride with very friendly operators. I recall one of them questioning the other about the speed as we blasted toward the Newark Bay Bridge. |

The semaphore at Moore Street, MP 13.1, is missing some lenses by this date, but is set in the down aspect, indicating stop. The term semaphore dates back to Roman times (at least) when signals were sent across battle fields and other long distances by men with flags, known as semaphores. |

Semaphore at Moore Street |
Description: |
This is the eastbound sempahore and smash board at Moore Street. This is the location of the second Hackensack depot on the Susquehanna. The smashboard dates back to when the drawbride over the Hackensack River hadn't yet been welded shut. When the bridge was open, this signal would drop in the path of the train, and break with a loud noise if a train went through it, acting as a secondary alert (after the signal) and a telltale that a train had ignored a stop signal. |

My first ever Suzy-Q train - I'd actually dreamt that I would see this train that morning... weird. It's crossing Moore Street here with the Bergen Record building in the background. I still recall that semaphore signal dropping and the realization that a train was coming! Sadly, I had my Kodak X15 Instamatic. As an aside, look at the crossing gates... notice the black and white stripes on the gates and the 'old' lantern-style teardrop lamps. When was the last time you saw those? |

Description: |
As the train pulls away to Main Street it passes an office building errected on the foundation of the original NYSW Hackensack depot. Note the wave from the friendly engineer. GP18 #1802 arrived on the property 8/62, with two sister GP18s. These were the first units to wear the yellow-jacket scheme. They were bought on a government loan arrnaged for by Irving Maidman, who had bought the Edgewater Ford plant and then bought the railroad to ensure service. Maidman, however, cut costs and killed the commuter trains. |

Conrail RDC local heads south in Croton |
Description: |
Freshly painted in MTA colors, an RDC1 is the entire Conrail local from Phougkeepsie. M19 was one of two Amtrak RDCs purchased by the MTA in 1977 to suppliment the Beeliner fleet. This one was Amtrak #19 (ex Penn Central 76, nee New Haven 32). It was altered from its original appearance by Amtrak with the addition of end diaphragms and raised headlights. Built by Budd Company in Philadelphia, PA. It was originally delivered to the New York, New Haven & Hartford in 1953. |

Conrail southbound at Radburn |
Description: |
CR freight on Bergen County Line passing the Radburn depot. I think it's a good guess that this is an NY74. #6374 was part of the CR's first batch of SD40-2s and is only a couple months old here. Radburn was a fun place to railfan, the first planned community in America, with a safe depot and enough trains to keep one busy. Note the old EL truck parked to the left. Today there is a canopy over the platform and no more through freight. |

Two sparkling new SD40-2s take TV98 south towards Croxton at about Milepost 21 and with about 970 miles behind it. TV98 was the daily Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), mail, and UPS overflow train from Chicago 51st Street to New York. The SD40-2s were part of CR's first order for them and were only a couple months old at the time. |

Patched Penn Central SD35 and SD40 with the daily merchandise NY-74 -- a holdover from Erie Lackawanna days, this was a Chicago to New York run that is here less than 30 minutes away from the end of its long journey to Croxton Yard. SD35 6010 was a Pennsylvania Railroad unit (called an EF25a there) delivered in 1965. CR's SD35s didn't fair well and were mostly gone by 1985. |

A married pair of Budd stainless steel PATCO-1 cars on the PATCO Hi-Speedline pass by ex PRSL Budd RDCs waiting to bring commuters to the Jersey Shore. The Hi Speed line cars were built by Budd in 1968. Riding these is fun as they have a full "railfan" window for the lucky passenger who gets the front seat. |

Description: |
Conrail Crusador from Reading Terminal in Philly to Newark, picks up speed after a Bound Brook stop. The Reading Crusado began 02/22/1938. By 1977 it was a SEPTA supported Conrail commuter run between Reading Terminal and Penn Station Newark. The lead RDC3 began life on the Boston & Maine 2/1958. She was sold to the Reading 8/1966, and then to SEPTA 5/1976. When this service was cancelled, she went to the Blue Mtn & Reading in 1984, and was badly damaged in 1987. |

Description: |
It was 96 degrees out with extreme humidity. The sun was lost in the haze. But for this lashup the shutter click was worth it, despite the backlit, dirty dishwater look, and the sweat pouring off me from the bike ride. An ex Reading GP35 lead an even more unique Conrail SD35, followed by the rarest of rare (and honestly maybe the only time one of these ever ran through here) Frisco high nose U25B #806. As I recall, the Frisco U25Bs that were leased to Conrail never went home again. I think that they were scrapped by Naparano shortly after this. |

SP MIOAY North and East Autos, the Turn out of Oakland |
Description: |
Building air in Milpitas is the MIOAY. This train started the day as the BROAT reaching Oakland that morning at 8AM as the 8400West, 6 1/2 hrs late. It became the X Auto Racks at 1p (on-time) as Extra 8400East (OAMIY) hitting Milpitas and becoming the MIOAY North and East Autos in this picture. It returned to Oakland about 8:15p as the 8400West. The OABRT with some of these autoracks left Oakland about 11:30p, 55 minutes late on its schedule and the balance of these autoracks left Oakland for the east on the OAOGF about 2a on Aug 2 (30 minutes early) the next morning for the UP. |

An Alco Escher |
Description: |
This is the view on August 6, 1978 from the extremely rickety and ancient steel footbridge over the Southern Pacific's small Bull Ring Yard in downtown Los Angeles, a second-generation diesel lover's dream. In this shot there are a U50, eight U25Bs, a C628, two C630s, two S6s, an RSD12 and a C415. Although the majority of these engines were sent to the torch, two of these units still survive today, RSD12 #2954 is at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum after a stint with Metropolitan Stevedore and S6 #1272 runs in Quebec for the Asbestos & Danville as their #57. |

C628s in the Bull Ring |
Description: |
A pair of Alco's lanky C628s wait in the Bone Yard section of the Bull Ring. The unit in the rear, #3110, was actually the class unit on the SP, delivered as #4845 in March of 1965, it later became the #7100 and then the #3110. Meanwhile, #3127 was delivered in April of 1965 as the #4864 before it became the #7117. These units were disliked by the SP crews and did not have a long life with the railroad. Today the exact spot where they are sitting is the fence that separtes Los Angeles State Historic Park from the Metro Rail Gold Line (which runs in the ROW to the left of the big Alcos). |

A C630's last days in the Bull Ring |
Description: |
This unit was originally delivered to the Southern Pacific as #7812 on April of 1966, making it only 12-years old when it found its way to the Bone Yard here in August of 1978. Initially assigned to the Roseville freight pool, the disliked units were then leased out to a number of other railroads. It was rebuilt as a heavy switcher by Hardy Street in Houston in 1973. |

Sep 1977 "North Hollywood Sabatoge" vicitm in the Bone Yard |
Description: |
The Bull Ring's sad lines of locos sit ready for the torch. While most are Alcos, early U-Boats and a DD35, there is also a wrecked Crud, #2463, the victim of foul play by two teenage boys a year earlier, who had sabatoged the unit, purposely derailing it and two cars on the Burbank Branch on September 19, 1977. Four trainmen were injured in the incident, two seriously. The SW1500 did not run again. In fact, as far as I know, no engine in this image ever did run again after I took this shot. |

Description: |
CR IHCR0's power, near the end of its journey from Hammond, IN (Indiana Harbor Belt Gibson Yard) to Seacacus (Croxton Yard), runs light from its cars past WJ Tower. This train would spend time in Meadeville PA on its way east, and was eventually replaced by a Meadeville to Croxton train. CR 2649 began life on the Pennsyvlania RR in 1965 where she was a class "GF25." She would be off the roster by 1984. |

TV16a with a string of GP40-2s |
Description: |
The GP40-2 was to Conrail what the Pontiac Trans Am was to high school - insular, fast, and snazzy. CR 3281 was a part of CR's first GP0-2 order which were delivered in Spring of 1977. The TV16 dated back to New York Central days and was a combined trailervan, autoracks train. TV16 would come in with the loaded autoracks behind the last vans. TV16 went in at CP-5 for running 1 or 3 Bellman's Creek and the cut was made behind the last North Bergen right on running 1 or 3. A local would bring the rear end crew up to Bellman's Creek to make the cut. |

Led, as it should be, by a former Reading unit, the Rutherford Yard to Selkirk train had begun its journey the previous day on former Reading trackage, in Harrisburg PA. Waiting at the fuel pad. The GP39-2 is still in Reading "candy apple green." It was delivered #3416 in 1974. It was later renumbered 385 (D&H Class ERS-23), before being reclaimed at the end of lease by its owner CSX in 1991. It's still on their roster. The RS11 was delivered to New York Central in March 1960 as NYC 8009, but was not accepted along with five other units. She was re-sold to D&H (class ARS-18) and labored on The Bridge Line until scrapping. |

The new GP40-2s were a staple on Conrail Trailer Van trains on the old NYC West Shore. This hotshot train ran from Chicago to Croxton at the time. It should have left Chicago Englewood at 1:30a, reached Elkhart at 4:15a, Toledo TV at 9:00a, Cleveland at 1:15p, Buffalo 6:30p, DeWitt at 11:00p, Selkirk at 2:15a, and through here at about 8:00a. Judging by the length of the shadows it was running pretty close to on time on this day. |

SLSE7 chugs through Mentor behind a pair of six-axle U-Boats, lead by U25C #6509. This unit began life with the Pennsyvlania in 1965 (where it was a GF25a). It kept number 6509 through Penn Central. Second unit is a U30C, also of PRR heritage (from 1967), where she was a GF30a. This train was running from East St. Louis, IL to Selkirk, NY, heading over the Chicago Line at this point after having run up the Indianapolis Line all the way to Cleveland. |

By December of 1978 a good chunk of Conrail ALCO Centuries were on the deadline in Collinwood Yard, but an ex Erie Lackawanna C424 (she'd been their 2410) was still working as a driller. She was 15 at this time, having been delivered June 1963 as part of Erie-Lackawanna's first order of new engines (delivered in black and yellow). In 1964 William White took over the EL, dropping the hyphen (and reinstating the Phoebe Snow and making this paint scheme universal). Separately, the Eaton smoke stack belongs to the fluid power systems manufacturer. |

Conrail's ELSY8 works its way through Collinwood Yard on the Chicago Line. This manifest ran from Elkhart IN to DeWitt Yard in Syracuse NY (spending its entire run on ex New York Central rails). You may note GP38-2 8254's star, which designated her for an ongoing cost comparison program. She was brand new, having arrived in September. The GP40 was delivered to New York Central in July of 1967. And 6089 arrived on the EL as 3624 in May of 1968. The other photog seen in the picture is my friend from NJ. |

Wreck damaged GP9 |
Description: |
Among the units on the Altoona dead line this day was this Penn Central GP9, which had been wrecked by a runaway box car in West Virginia (in September of 1977, I believe). #7232 had been one of the few PC units to wear the red "P." She was delivered to the Pennsylvania in October 1959. Erie Lackawanna 1025, an RS3, was delivered to the Erie in March 1951. They were among dozens and dozens of engines awiting the torch, sitting in the serene and crystal snow that day. |

CR 9946 on West End Drill |
Description: |
Note the hogger (Steve Bonschur) and the brakie (Blackie O'Donnel). The West End Yard office is behind the "DeWitt Geep," an ALCO RS3 re-engined with an E8 567. Penn Central started making them and Conrail continued. Half of them wouldn't MU with other engines, the air piping didn't match up. Crews referred to them as 9900's. The program was started at DeWitt, but #9946 was rebuilt at Junianta November 1978. It had been CR #5374, nee Central of New Jersey #1544, which was delivered June 1950. |

Description: |
Conrail 23B drops down the lead to Rockville Bridge over Conrail ENPI6b, which has an EMD, a GE and an ALCO in the consist. The Enola to Pittsburgh train had a fairly short run to complete. At this point in time Conrail was three years old, but Penn Central's deferred maintenance was still evident in the physical plant of what had once been the pride of the Pennsylvania Railroad. PC 6239 was one of only six SD45s delivered new to Penn Central (the rest of the fleet came from PRR). |

Delaware & Hudson RW6 |
Description: |
The RW6 works its way over Rockville Bridge before turning south towards Enola Yard. This was the "Paper Train" from Rouses Point NY to Potomac Yard, bringing newspaper stock to DC. In order to give competition to Conrail, Delaware and Hudson had been assigned trackage rights to Potomac Yard, Philadelphia, and Oak Island three years earler. They also received thirty locomotives from the Reading and Lehigh Valley. DH 7415 was a Reading GP39-2 when delivered in 1974. It, and sister 7314 (a former Lehigh Valley GP38-2 from 1972) are wearing "Altshul Blue" here. |

Description: |
An SD40-2 leads two U25Bs on an unidentified eastbound. Most trains chattered on the scanner through here and you knew exactly who they were. This one just silently appeared. The platform that is disappearing under the foliage to the right had been the outbound egress point for New York Central commuter trains, but hadn't seen passenger service in 22 years. CR 6480 was part of their third order for SD40-2s and arrived 11/78. Both U25Bs are ex New York Central, dating from 9/65 and 3/64. |

One thing about scanning slides, sometimes the slide looks okay and the scan reveals to you the picture was soft. Kind of edited this back... D&H RS3m (or MK TE56-4A if you prefer) #504 reseting on a foggy afternoon in Oneonta NY on December 29, 1979. My friend had been accepted to SUNY Oneonta and we decided on a wild whim to just drive up there (from Paramus, NJ). Obviously I had the camera with me, although I'm surprised I did because we were literally just hanging out talking and next thing I knew, we were driving the three hours from our home to see his college. We drove up in my 1971 Ford Torino. We had two near accidents (two of the worst near accidents I would say I've ever had, glad we're both still alive) and came home to two sets of irate/upset/anxiety ridden parents who wanted to know where we had disappeared to for seven hours (assuming we spent an hour in Oneonta). I recall saying there was a Delaware & Hudson yard in town and that was another good reason to go there. The things we do when we're young. |
