A purchased slide. |
Description: |
Various sources have reported these to be called Crandall Cabs. During a power crunch C&NW bought surplus units from UP and added these cabs. The name appears to have come from the designer of the cabs. Some report these as E8Bs, While others call them E9Bs. |

Whatever works |
Description: |
As the railroads got out of the passenger business through the 1960s, many passenger diesels became available. UP had a sizeable fleet of E units, both As and Bs. Seeing a bargain, the Northwestern acquired a group of E8Bs, and under the supervision of Chief Mechanical Officer M H Crandall, rebuilt them with cabs and put them into Chicago commuter service. Heres the first one, at Northwestern Station, waiting to back onto an outbound train. |

C&NW E9BA 501 |
Description: |
C&NW E9BA 501 at Clybourn Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 501 was built in December 1962 as UP E9B 910B (c/n 27696) on EMD Order 7629. It was sold to PNC and purchased by the C&NW in September 1972. It was rebuilt by the C&NW, received a home-made cab (designated as a Crandall Cab, named after the Assistant Superintendent of Motive Power M. H. Crandall), and became C&NW 501 on May 12, 1973 (held in the accounts as a CGW locomotive). It was retired by the C&NW on December 31, 1977, sold to the RTA and leased back for operation. It was retired by the RTA May 2, 1983, sold to Naporano Iron & Metal as scrapped sometime around June-July 1985. |

Chicago & North Western Railway E9BA 502 at the Clybourn Avenue station in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was stenciled; IN MEMORY OF M. H. CRANDALL (below the side cab window). Assistant Superintendent of Motive Power, M. H. Crandall, designed the homemade cabs for the former Union Pacific B-units as seen here. Apparently the cabs were uncomfortable, but I have no first hand knowledge. |

C&NW E9BA 502 |
Description: |
Chicago & North Western Railway E9BA 502 a little south of Fullerton Avenue crossing the North Branch of the Chicago River on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. By this date the locomotive and cars (except the first two) are in the employ of the Regional Transportation Authorrity (RTA), leased back to the C&NW for operation and maintenance. The first two cars (single level club cars, aka 'banker's cars') are privately owned by Commuter Associates, Inc. for their exclusive use. Club car service began on the C&NW's commuter lines on April 1, 1929 with a single heavyweight converted coach numbered 6700. As the coach wore out, it was replaced over time, but the replacements were assigned the number 6700. Eventually the service expanded and at its peak (around 1965) it consisted of four cars: 6700, 510, 553, and 555. The last three car numbers related to time; 510 was the historic departure time, 533 and 555 were the arrival times at Lake Forest and Lake Bluff respectively. As service declined, the service demanded less cars, but one remained in service as of the year 2009. Note also that the colors are changing on the equipment, and the club cars will eventually be repainted in RTA colors. |

C&NW 40th Street Shops |
Description: |
Chicago & North Western Railway 40th Street Shops at Keeler Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on September 4, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was Keeler Avenue in Chicago, but it also went by the name 40th Street Shops. This particular building was known as M-19A to C&NW employees. Left to right: C&NW 503 was built as UP E2B 984C (originally, #LA3, c/n 743, EMC order number E158B, built October 1937), rebuilt by EMD in March 1953 to E8B 925B. After Amtrak took over rail passenger service in 1971, B-units were not in demand, and the C&NW picked up a few, this one entered C&NW service June 5, 1973. The C&NW added a homemade cab (Crandall Cab), and put the E-8Bm in commuter service. Number 400 is an Executive F, and yes that is a different yellow paint than the other units have (called Zito Yellow, a reference to Jim Zito, senior vice president-operations at the time that use of the paint began around 1980). This was the 2nd 400, delivered October 1949 to the C&NW as F-7 4084C (c/n 8573), retired January 8, 1985. The next two (#'s 406 and 413) are work-a-day commuter F-7's. Number 406 pictured was actually the 3rd 406. The first was Minneapolis & St. Louis (M&StL) F-7A 150A, and the second was Litchfield & Madison (L&M) RS-3 301, later 905. This one was built as C&NW F-7A 4086A in December 1949 (c/n 8576 on EMD order E1188), retired December 31, 1977, sold to the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and leased back to the C&NW the very next day, January 1, 1978, retired from the RTA May 2, 1983. So, if this photo was shot on the date I say, there might be more research in order. Number 413 is the 2nd 413, the first being M&StL F-7 151C, retired in 1963. The one pictured above was delivered to the C&NW as 4083A (c/n 8750 on EMD order E1188) in December 1949, renumbered December 1971. It was retired from the C&NW December 31, 1977, sold the the RTA, and leased back to the C&NW the next day. Utahrails.net lists it as retired from the RTA on May 2, 1983, but I feel pretty good about the date of the photo, so perhaps some sort of arrangement took place to keep it on the road a bit longer. At the time of this photo, the C&NW was "Employee Owned", and the C&NW's Ball And Bar logo at the top of the building appears to have been adjusted accordingly. |
