The day prior to when I took this trip I was in Cincinnati with a buddy when I was scrolling on Facebook. The Wheeling transfer job to the IORY in Lima was utilizing BOTH DRGW Tunnel Motors, and with the following day off, I knew I couldnt pass up on something so spectacular, as both units had never been paired together on a train to Lima in some time. The following morning, I woke up early and made the drive to Lima. Since the crew had gotten in late the day before, they would not be coming on duty until later in the day, which gave me the opportunity to grab some other trains around town. When I approached Lima, the scanner came to life giving me a heads up to a southbound CSX M209. I went down to DT&I Junction to grab it coming by the CPLs. A lot of morning shadows still covered the tracks here, but I did what I could. |

I decided to head back to Ford Park Yard to see if the Wheeling crew had arrived. They had not. However, LSW-1 the Ford Park Yard hustler, was pulling a long string of cars across CP Morris by the searchlight signals. A former CSX Dash 8 is todays yard unit. Shocking to thing that the big GEs are now tackling these jobs too. |

As I was photographing the yard job, the Lima B Job, L221, was getting permission to go north on CSX. I was able to make it down to DT&I Junction in time, but not in time to get on the correct side for the sun. One geep and one hopper car is the power for the B Job this day. I would have thought the CSX Dash 8 and Geep would be on opposite trains, but apparently not. |

I knew that the IORY LNL was still out there, and I had wanted to get a shot of it passing the distant signal for DT&I Junction, but upon hearing that the Wheeling had a crew, I changed plans and went to watch it with all the other railfans. Well, that turned out to be a mistake, as when we all moved down to Bible Road, the headlight of the LNL popped around the corner and approached us. A pair of former BNSF Dash 9s were the power for todays train. |

And with that, the chase was on....we thought. CFE had some MOW equipment that they had to get off the tracks first, and with the only side track being in Ada past Upper Sandusky, that was the only option, so the train had to sit in Ada for a good hour to wait on the equipment to get out of the way. By that point, the sun had turned, and I opted to not shoot the train passing the turned PLs outside of Ada, but rather a side shot along Ohio 81 about a quarter mile further to the east. Finally, with the MOW equipment out of the way, the train was underway once again. And yes, I believe I did make the right choice going with this side shot. |

Turned out they didnt. and I could have gotten my shot at Nevada, but oh well, maybe next time. Just as Sandusky Dispatch had said, after one Wheeling 430 continued on. Now on signaled territory, the train gave up their track warrant between Lima and Colsan. I was a bit worried the train would now be doing full tilt at 60 MPH, but thankfully there must have been a speed restriction in place. Once I grabbed my shot of the train passing the MEAD PLs in North Robinson, it was onto Crestline for a shot under the biggest signal bridge in the state of Ohio, and one final shot at CP 75 on CSX. |

For some reason it didnt cross my mind that the train would be staying on the main at CP West Yard and not going into the yard, so the shot ended up looking a little funky, but Wheeling 430 passes under the massive signal bridge at CP West Yard on the west side of Crestline. Conrail replaced the signals here back in the 80s I believe with trilights (if someone could elaborate on that that would be fantastic), but Ill take the trilights over vaders anyday. |

Now onto the CSX main line at CP 75, the train passes the trilights in town notching up for the quick trip back to home rails in New London. If it wouldnt have been for having to get to my goddaughters T-Ball game that evening, I would have continued to chase even further. Probably to New London at least. But, the chase ended here as I had reached my limit on time right as the train passed the camera here. What a chase it was! Glad I was able to mark this off the bucket list! |
