Description:  Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken in Enola, Pennsylvania, on 20 October 1957. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9551 and two more "EF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9551 is an EH-15 constructed in December of 1948, rebuilt later as an EF-15A, and retired in September of 1965 after just 17 years of revenue service. Description:  Kern. Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken near Perdix, Pennsylvania, on 20 October 1957. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9700 and two more "BF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9700 is a BF-15A constructed in April of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of service. In this context, this A-B-B set is passing under four-track Signal Bridge #1142 with a long string of empty hoppers on their way back to the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. Blue Mountain dominates the distance.

In this context, this A-B-B set is rockin' 'n' rollin' with a long string of empty hoppers on their way back to Altoona and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.

Description:  Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken near Cove, Pennsylvania, on 9 January 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9546 and #9550-B. Both were built as EH-15's by GM-EMD, rated at 1,500 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as EF-15A's. #9546 was constructed in November of 1948 and retired in December of 1963, while #9550-B was built in December of 1948 and retired in September of 1965.

In this context, this A-B set is pulling a string of "Yellow Ball" 100-ton capacity hoppers back to Western Pennsylvania's coal mines.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9849 and two "Geeps" whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #9849 is an EFP-15 built in May of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. That's BANKS Tower in the middle distance; Blue Mountain dominates the background; between them (though not visible) is the mighty Susquehanna River flowing from left to right on its merry way to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
