Working Agway |
Description: |
Conrail worked only a few industries in Binghamton. One of them was the Agway feed mill. Here we see local WABH 11 there switching with a GP 40-2. The mills is behind the tree, partially visible. The track the train is on was once the Syracuse adn Utica branch main. The signal above the hoppers protected that line at BX cabin where it crossed the D&H, whose Beview St yard is behind the train out of view. This area itself was part of DLWs YO yard, which was adjacent to the D&H. |

Coal to Goudy |
Description: |
NYSEGs Goudy station in Johnson City was the largest, and one of the few, customers remaining on the ex DLW in the Binghamton area. They got about 90 cars of coal three times/week. The trains would come in with road power, which would lay over til the loads were spotted and empties pulled and brought back to the yard, though occasionally the road power would go back to Buffalo on OIBU, with empties going back on subsequent OIBUs. The plant was serviced by Binghamton local WABH 11, which would take a cut of 45-50 cars down to the plant, spot them and return with empties, which were usually staged on track 4 between the Chenango River and CP Johnson. Today we have CR 3336 going to the plant with 52 loads, seen on the DLW main about to cross the river. |

On the DLW |
Description: |
WABH 11 with its 52 coal loads for NYSEG is now on the Lackawanna main, such as it exists in 1992, and has just crossed into Johnson City. Not exactly the 70 MPH main line of yore. |

Industrial giants |
Description: |
Not anymore. WABH 11 passes between one of the many Endicott Johnson buildings in the area, on the left, and the Fair Play Caramel building on the right. The DLW station once sat here too, just the other side of Baldwin St, out of the photo to my right. Now its a single track, jointed rail, rough ride to Vestal. The coal wont get that far; its destination is only about 1/2 mile ahead in JC. |

TV 79 |
Description: |
One of the hotter van trains to run the Water Level Route was TV 79, which was a djrect connection to the Santa Fe at Chicago, along with TVLA. The two often ran close to each other, one almost on the others blocks. Here, TV 79 passes the old NYC 1957 station at Dewivt with 74 TOFC and 28 stacks. Even at this late date, it was not uncommon to find sets of 4 motor power on van trains. |

AMTK 406, F40PHR, 1995 |
Description: |
Amtrak. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken from the 4th Street Footbridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 July 1995. Prominent here is Amtrak engine #406, an F-40PHR built by GM-EMD in January of 1988 and rated at 3,200 horsepower. In this context, it's just departed the Altoona Passenger Station with a four-car passenger train bound for Harrisburg and points East. At the same time, three Conrail diesel-electric locomotives built by GM-EMD are departing the Westbound Classification Yard with a freight train bound for Conway. Note the two iterations of the 7th Street Bridge in the distance: the old and the new! |
