Title:
CNJ 4-8-0C #469 - Central RR of New Jersey
Description:
As camelback locomotives go, this was a brute but was well suited to the hilly CNJ landscape while hauling coal. Built by Brooks (Alco) in 1900, it was well suited to burn the anthracite fuel in its wide Wooten firebox (123" long by 97" wide) which needed two firemen to stoke its hungry mouth. CNJ renumbered their class so this was actually built at #454. More than half retired before WWII with the last of the class scrapped in 1948 (#465). Specs - K-1 class, 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x32" cylinders, engine weight of 201,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,619 lb. Rebuilt and superheated by the CNJ shops at Elizabethport in March 1917 to class K1s and rebuilt to class K1as at Ashley in November 1924. The photo is from the Bob Lorenz collection and the date is approximate.
