PRR 6439, J-1, 1951
Rolfe. Here is an original photo by N. Rolfe that was taken near the 12th Street Footbridge and Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, 4 November 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6439, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during October of 1943 and retired in November of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. The number of the N-5 cabin car is not recorded. Visible in the background are some of the building constituting the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. In olden times, this was the site of three locomotive roundhouses as well as the Altoona Machine Shops which produced many of the Pennsy's engines following the end of the American Civil War. #4 of 6.

Robert Anderson General This machine with that tender just looks like it means business. The B&W image actually enhances all that power. Keep the mighty PRR coming. Thanks for sharing the vintage. 10/28/2018 3:43:19 AM
