PRR 9448, FF-16, 1953
NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9448 and two more "C-Liners" whose road numbers are not recorded. #9448 is an FF-16 built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1949, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in April of 1965. They are pulling a merchandise train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to the Enola Yards. Note the brakemen riding atop the box cars!
