Delivered to Southern Pacific as SP 9219 SD45T-2 in April 1972 this diesel has the distinction of being the last unit rebuilt at the Sacramento shops emerging as GRIP rebuild SD45T-2R in December 1989. It's not clear if this unit was transferred to Cotton Belt before or after rebuilding but after this unit departed Sacramento SP closed the shops so this was the final GRIP unit rebuilt by SP employees. After rebuilding this unit was derated to 3,200 horsepower and worked for SP then sucessor UP until retirement on December 28, 1999. Union Pacific assigned this locomotive a new number, 4799 in September 1997 but was retired before a patch or repainting could occur. I was unable to find any information on the disposition of this EMD after retirement so most likely it met the scrapper's torch. In this photo SSW 6892 is working with a former Mopac SD40-2 demoted to B-Unit status in the former Espee Englewood Yard in Houston. |
