Old structure found
This old structure was found about 3 miles north of Ft Gaines GA. The structure once carried the tracks of the Central of Georgia over this small stream. It was tall enough that I could nearly walk upright through it. What would be the purpose of the boards at the bottom of the stream bed??? Erosion control??

Eric Rickert General My guess is that the boards in stream served as a one-time livestock crossing beneath the railroad. If there were erosion /scouring problems at this culvert, rip-rap rock would've likely been used instead. I've read that the Fort Gaines branch was abandoned by the CofG in the early 1960's. Supposedly, the last freight traffic was construction material for building the Walter George resevior, lock and dam on the Chattahoochee River near Ft. Gaines. Once the dam was complete, the branch was soon abandoned afterwards. 2/25/2009 11:09:21 PM
