A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Mar. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train at right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. |

The guard rail at right marks the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It was built in 1891, to replace the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5752 and another "PA" Class unit whose number is not recorded. #5752 is an AP-20 built by the American Locomotive Company in October of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an AFP-20, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they've paused at the Altoona Passenger Station to discharge/pick-up passengers and to change both engine and train crews. Note the railroader at the right who is adjusting the coupler so that the "snapper" can couple on and help pull the train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The buildings in the background are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. |
