Captioned "The Original Super Chief" |
Description: |
Slide purchased many years ago. Date is "1936." I did not know the location but Jack D. Kuiphoff saw this posting and sent me the following: "I have many photographs from here, and beleive this is an east bound at West Darling, Arizona." Thanks Jack. Then Willard Seehorn commented "These are EMC 1A and 1B, the same picture appears on Page 6 of Priest's 'The Santa Fe Diesel'. Picture: Captioned 'The Original Super Chief'" Thanks Willard. |

Description: |
Here is page one of an eight-page cover article by David P. Morgan & Al Kamm, Jr., entitled "Those Esthetic E's: A Story Of The Power That Bumped Steam Off The Varnish." It was published originally in the May 1964 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 20. Partially visible in the center is EMDX 765, an E-7 built by GM-EMD in April of 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. It powered GM-EMD's "Train Of Tomorrow" around the country for 28 months before being acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad. |

B&O 50, The Mother of All Passenger Diesels |
Description: |
From northeast.railfan.net: "Electro-Motive Corp. model AA passenger locomotive. It was a very historic diesel locomotive, the first passenger road locomotive not articulated to its train. Placed in Royal Blue service (Jersey City - Washington DC.) on 8/22/35, it was transferred to Abraham Lincoln service (Chicago - St. Louis) on B&O subsidiary Alton in 4/36. Following the B&O-Alton breakup, Alton bought it in 5/43. Following WWII, it became GM&O #1200 and served in local freight service and on the Joliet commuter train. Retired in 1956, {it was} donated by the scrapper to St. Louis {the Nat'l Museum of Transport} in late 1958. - James Mischke" |

EMD Boxcab #511 (see text) with CB&Q Afternoon Zephyr Probably Winter 1937-38 |
Description: |
Date unknown. The ice on the Mississippi indicates winter. That's the northeast corner (looking west) of the GN Station and the Hennepin Av. bridge over the river. Mike Woodruff saw this posting and sent me the following: EMD 511 and 512 were 1,800 hp boxcabs built in May, 1935, each powered by two 201A Winton engines (basically two NW1 switcher engines) inside carbodies from GE's Erie Works. (B&O 50 which later ran on the Alton Route, and ATSF 1 and 1A which powered the original Super Chief were very similar in appearance and essentially identical mechanically.) The 511 and 512 were never CB&Q engines but were EMD demonstrators. In Otto Perry's book, there are pics of EMD 511 which show it pulling CB&Q train second #1 near McCook, Nebraska in August of 1937, and of EMD 512 shown working on the Super Chief with ATSF 1A near Trinidad, Colorado in May, 1937. Kalmbach's Diesel Spotters Guide says that although CB&Q 9904 Pegasus/9905 Zephyrus were the power units built (in 1936) for the second pair of Twin Zephyrs, "during 1937 and 1938, it was common to see the (Twin Zephyr) consists being led by EMD demonstrator 511, repainted from the original dark scheme to silver for a long period of testing on the Burlington." Since the units are listed as scrapped in 1938, it's probably safe to say that the picture was taken during the winter of 1937-38. Just speculating now, but I'll guess that EMD 511 spent a lot of time on the Burlington and EMD 512 on the Santa Fe while problems with the CB&Q 9904/9905 Zephyr and ATSF 1/1A Super Chief locomotives were being worked out - these units being called "demonstrators" but perhaps serving more as what we would now term "warranty protection" power. |

Slide purchased years ago. Date unknown. This is probably either 9906A or 9907A. My guess the!train is the SB Moring Zephyr because of all the domes. The slide is labeled "Twin Cities Zephyr" which it certainly is not. Note the second unit is is an E5B. |

CB&Q 9900 |
Description: |
CB&Q Pioneer Zephyr 9900 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown da| in July, 1959, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built April 7, 1934 (ordered June 17, 1933) by Budd (c/n 509), powered by an EMC Winton eight-cylinher Model 201A diesel (original block was s/n 4510, now at the Smithsonian, replaced around 1937 with block s/n 4686) , it is seen here in one of its many configuratUons during its service life. Originally a three car train (power unit, baggage/coach, coach/observation) it was re-equipped in late-1934 by adding chair car 525, re-equipped again Tn 1937 with car 500 (40 chair seats and a buffet/pantry/kitchen) replacing 525. Another modification was to move the air horns from behind the intake grills (which were directed downward, to the annoyance of the engine crew) to the roof top. Between 1946-48, the Zephyr (officially re-named the Pioneer Zephyr November 11, 1936) acquired the Mars Light above the headlight. It was regularly assigned to Omaha-Kansas City routes until retired in 1960 and donated to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Between 1994-1998, the Pioneer Zephyr was cosmetically restored to as-built appearance and the Mars Light was removed. The four yellow hash marks seen below the cab window are service marks (one hash mark for each five years of service) applied by the Burlington during the late-1940's. It will shortly receive a fifth hash mark just before retirement. |
