Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #2229, #2501, and #2529. #2229 is an EF-22 built by EMD in 1963 and rated at 2,200 horsepower. #2501 and #2529 are GF-25's built by General Electric and rated at 2,500 horsepower each; #2501 was built in 1962, but #2529 was built in 1964. They are pulling a 45-car westbund manifest freight train through the Altoona Passenger Station on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is N-8 #478159. Pennsylvania Railroad GP35 2299 and U25B 2501 at about 59th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. the GP35 was built in November 1964 (c/n 29607) on EMD Order 7765, class EF25 on the PRR, it became PC and CR 2299, and was eventually scrapped by CR at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The U25B was built in August 1962 (c/n 34529), class GF-25, became PC and CR 2601.

Burkey. Here is the second of two original photos by an unidentified photographer that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. July of 1963. Prominent in the foreground are two handsome youngsters whose names are not recorded. Beyond them (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2229, #2508, and an "AF" Class unit whose road number is not recorded. #2229 is an EF-22 built by GM-EMD in April of 1963 and rated at 2,200 horsepower. while #2508 is a GF-25 built by General Electric in September of 1962 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #2511, #9546-B, and #9686. #2511 is a GF-25 built by GE in 1962 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #9546-B and #9686 are EH-15's built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; the B-unit was built in 1948, but the A-unit was built in 1949. These three Diesels, two freight cars, PRR caboose #477781, and three ALCO helper engines have just arrived from Altoona and have stopped in the middle of US Route 22 so that the fireman can call-in to request clearance to proceed up the New Portage Branch for a short distance and then stop. After that, they will back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then pull it up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here are four diesel-electric locomotives pulling an eastbound manifest freight train that stretches all the way around this curve in the Susquehanna River and out of sight at the upper right. In the lead (R to L) are engines #2281, #2527, #2234, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #2281 is an EF-25 built by GM-EMD in June of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2527 is a GF-25 built by General Electric in October of 1962 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2234 is an EF-22 built by GM-EMD in April of 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Altoona Action. Here is an original 35mm color slide by Frank Ries that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1965. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2529 and #2544. Both are GF-25's built by General Electric and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #2529 was constructed in September of 1964, while #2544 was built in February of 1965. Partially visible at the left is PRR passenger coach #3000, newly refurbished in Altoona's Passenger Car Shops. Partially visible at the right is the 7th Street Bridge. The photographer is standing on the decrepit remnants of 9th Avenue; Conway is to his left, Enola is to his right.
