Title:  White flags
Description:  This early morning eastbound has white flags flying, indicating and extra train as it rolls out of the sun with 88 cars behind three big Ms. It was Canadian Pacific practice to run freights as extras, even if they had a schedule. As such, they flew white flags, a practice that had largely ended in the US.

Description:  Train 554 rolls south over the high bridge at Harpursville. Im standing on the former Penn Division bridge over Wylie Creek and NY 7 to get the photo. This bridge would be removed a few years hence, and the NY 7 bridge would be replaced by a more modern structure with shoulders, making photos from there a lot easier.

Description:  This eastbound had an SD 40 leading, but three 6 axle MLWs in the consist for its 106 cars. Eastern Canada was Alco paradise in this time, long after the US class 1s had shed them from their rosters. Note the white flags, denoting an extra train. All CP freights ran as extras, and all flew the correct flags. This was another practice that was a lost art in the US.

Description:  CP still had a good sized fleet of MLWs in that period, and they often ran on the D&H. Here 553 holds the main as 556 rolls its 52 cars past with a GP9 rebuild leading a pair of C424s, passing the M636 trailing on 553.

Description:  This 553 train left Binghamton with CP 5646 leading. it must have crapped out somewhere on Belden Hill and this GP9 leader was brought up from Binghamton, or swapped off 556. Still, it looks good in clean paint, even if the delay has now put the train almost in darkness, now rolling on past GR with its 82 cars.
