Southern Railway NW2 2265 was eastbound (timetable north) on the railroad’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary, as seen from new the Elysian Fields Avenue Overpass. The train would have been a transfer run from one of the western connections to the Southern’s PRESS STREET YARD. Notice how the layer of ballast under the track gets deeper as you as you look off into the distance. That was because the track had been recently raised to accommodate the new North Broad Street Underpass which was under construction near the end of the train. The Florida Avenue Drainage Canal is on the left of the tracks. (approximate day of photo) |

Southern Railway NW2 6050 was tied up at SLIP JUNCTION in the New Orleans suburb of Chalmette. This location got its name because the railroad’s CHALMETTE SLIP was nearby on the Mississippi River. The locomotive had been built in December 1941 and spent most of its life in the New Orleans area. It was renumbered 1076 at New Orleans in December 1972 and retired in 1977. |
