Kansas City Southern GP40 786 was parked at
WEST YARD
, just outside of New Orleans. It had been built in February 1967 as Illinois Central 3050 (EMD 32870) and was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired. In July 1991 KCS sent the 786 to Morrison Knudsen’s
MOUNTAINTOP LOCOMOTIVE SHOP
in Pennsylvania to have its prime mover swapped with the 4748, which was then upgraded into GP40M-2 4782. The 786 remained at Mountaintop and was finally scrapped in March 1996.
