Busy day |
Description: |
Most commuter lines tend to be heavy one way in te morning, the other in the afternoon. Such was not the case by the late 70s on the New Haven Line. Enough places had relocated to Fairfield County that ridership was prtty good in both directions most of the day. Its mid afternoon, and a good crowd is waiting for the New Haven bound train. |

Rolling out |
Description: |
A Grand Central bound train rolls out of Brewster on a cold winter day. The FL 9s were hand me downs from the New Haven, acquired when it was forced into the Penn Central n 1969. By then, the long haul business was in decline, and they started to work their way onto NYC lines, supplanting the Centrals fleet of RS 3s. Amtrak took a dozen of these units at start up in 1971, the rest going to PC. They became a staple of the diesel trains on the Harlem Line, as well as Poughkeepsie trains. |

The funding for commuter trains following the start up of Conrail was convoluted. NY State put up a big pile of money via the MTA to keep the trains running, with Conrail the contract operator. Hand me downs |
Description: |
The Danbury-and upper Harlem and Hudson-trains uses a motley collection of cars that were passed down to commuter service as PC got out of the long distance trade. Many were wanting for maintenance, though to the casual railfan rider who didnt have to deal with their lack of heat in the winter, and overabundance of it in the summer, they were like riding a museum. The best train was one of the Danbury runs thad had a full set of New Haven "American Flyer" cars. |
