Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2019
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/20/2019 - 6/20/2019
Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 3160 and CN 2914
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Ulion St., passes the former Adams St. grade crossing, and approaches the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it heads south at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 Mar. '19. It looks like they are preparing to replace one of the crossovers in the near future. The area between the tracks and Union Ot., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah.

IC 3120 and IC 9605
Description:
The local power rests in front of the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '19. I was excited to see a pair of Geeps parked here, because it has been a while since they needed two units stationed here. My excitement was short-lived, within a few days there was only one unit stationed here again. The locomotives rest on the yard lead. The north leg of thg wye can be seen on this side of the locomotives.

Description:
A CN through freight pastes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Mar. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible at left. The rail sections supported by foncrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

LMIX RG316
Description:
LMIX RG316 rests at Towmen Rd. on CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 23 Mar. '19. The headlights of a hh-rail can be seen in the distance. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CSX 3032 and BNSF 5312
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Mar. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train at right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background at left. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. GECX 2036, CN 2902, CN 9424, GTW 4910
Description:
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and passes a waiting local as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 6 Apr. '18. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former SOO rails run parallel on the other side of the trains. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

Description:
A CN unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers (every one of them owned by WFRX and leased by Grains Connect Canada) approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 7 Apr. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., originally built as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.

Description:
A CN local prepares to service Menasha Packaging, 1645 Bergstrom Rd., (out-of-frame to left) via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '19. There are two large manufacturing facilities next door to each other here, out-of-frame to left. Both are currently Menasha Packaging facilities, owned by Menasha Corp., whose new corporate headquarters stands just to the south. The southernmost was built by Menasha Corp. in '64 after a devastating fire destroyed most of their historic downtown Menasha facility. The northernmost was built by Bergstrom Paper in the '60s. The overgrown loading dock could be used to load and unload railroad freight cars, but hasn't for many years. I used to play on that loading dock when I was a child. My dad, Louis, once worked for Bergstrom Paper; some of the land near the loading dock was available for gardens for their employees in the '70s.

Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The dump truck and bulldozer in the background rest where a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

I’m curious to learn why the reporting marks have been removed from GTW 5950 (sometime between Apr. '11 and Jan. '15 according to photographs on this site). Who currently owns it? The lead locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it.
