Odd equipment for a passenger train
Title:  Odd equipment for a passenger train
Description:  Amtrak inherited a fleet of auto racks from Auto Train when it took over that operation. They typically were put on the rear of the train, as we see here at Woodbridge VA. Todays train has 34 cars. My notes dont break down the consist, but Id say about 24 of them are racks. It made for an impressive looking train.

Dome east
Title:  Dome east
Description:  The only dome Amtrak ran on a regular basis in the east was this car on the Capitol. Almost all the other routes could not clear it, since most of then went to New York, which did not have the clearance for it. Wcshingon Union Station did, and the Capitol riders were blessed with this car, seen eastbound at Point of Rocks.

Wash rack train
Title:  Wash rack train
Description:  The Pennsy, in their wisdom, built this loop track to allow passenger trains coming from Penn Station to enter Sunnyside yard. Along the loop track that passed under the LIRR was a washer, which cleaned the outside of the trains as they approached the yard. This one is about to get a bath prior to entering the yard. The yard itself is in the middle background, and was once the largest passenger yard in the world.

Unsung heroes
Title:  Unsung heroes
Description:  Even if they are orange. The work train units are relegated to a track away from the main part of the yard. But without the wire train, nobody goes anywhere. This pair of aging GPs keeps the place moving, so all those high speed electrics can run 100 MPH.

Ladder tracks
Title:  Ladder tracks
Description:  All kinds of interesting things could be found here years ago-GG 1s, B 3s, P 5s; the Pennsy was an interesting operation. Now, in the late 1980s, its E 60s and AEM 7s. They get the job done, though not as flashy as the old PRR. An AEM 7 rolls off one of the ladder tracks into the yard, passing another AEM 7 led train ready to go out.

Dual power
Title:  Dual power
Description:  Train 49, the Lake Shore Limited, arrives at Albany-Renssalaer behind a pair of FL 9s. Originally built for the New Haven basically as an FP 9 with third rail capability to run through from Grand Central to non electrified territory, a dozen found their way onto Amtrak, where eventually six would survive into the 1990s. Using them eliminated the time honored engine change at Harmon, and trains could run straight through to Albany, where the train would have the Boston section switched in. Now the switching and engine change could be completed simultaneously, saving time.
